Some 10,000 health workers in Greece faced being suspended as a deadline to get vaccinated against Covid-19 ran out on Wednesday, a union said.

From September 1, inoculations become mandatory for health workers, and those who don't comply will not be allowed to work.
Protests broke out on Wednesday morning in front of hospitals throughout the country to oppose compulsory vaccinations and to highlight the consequences of mass dismissals on the country's health services.
According to estimates by the National Federation of Public Hospital Workers, some 10,000 health workers, or 10 percent of the workforce, had not been jabbed by Wednesday.
More specifically, the ambulance service will have to work with 1,245 less personnel, financial newspaper Naftemporiki reported.
-We are pushing health workers to be vaccinated, but we are against compulsory vaccination, which poses a democratic problem- Dimitris Kourouvalakis, a member of the executive committee of the federation, told AFP.
The federation has called for a strike on Thursday morning, and protests in Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece's second biggest city.
Health Minister Athanassios Plevris said Wednesday that the legislation bringing in mandatory vaccinations, which was voted in July, "will be implemented."
The government is now trying to find measures to fill the gaps, such as suspending holidays for health workers who have been vaccinated, to ensure that services are fully operational. 
It also plans to move ahead with a reshuffle of healthcare workers within hospitals, mergers of clinics, the replacement of those suspended with auxiliary staff and partnerships with the private sector.
According to the government, over 90 percent of patients currently hospitalised with Covid-19 are not vaccinated.
More than 5.7 million in a 10.7-million-strong population are fully jabbed.

The Public Health Institute of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the FB&amp;H Red Cross signed an agreement today, which formalizes the successful cooperation between the two institutions during the COVID- pandemic 19.

The agreement requires continued cooperation, including partnership in organizing the process of mass immunization of the population in FB&amp;H against COVID 19.
It represents a working plan for cooperation between the two institutions and joint work wherever and whenever possible, initiatives and activities in the field of mass immunization, mutual cooperation with the aim of protecting health in crisis situations.
One of the signatories, Secretary-General of the FB&amp;H Red Cross Namik Hodžić, told reporters that the organization would assist the Institute in the administrative part of the immunization process, as well as the population, especially those living far from vaccination sites, and other relevant activities. 
The activities at the checkpoints include assistance in maintaining hygienic-epidemiological measures, assistance in the arrival of especially elderly and less mobile people, as well as in identification of citizens upon arrival for vaccination. It is also possible to transport elderly and less mobile people, vulnerable categories.
Hodžić reminds that the Red Cross has been cooperating with the Institute since the beginning of the pandemic and, based on today's agreement, is putting up capacities with the aim of supporting the organization of the process of mass immunization. A contract for the procurement of fifteen new low-floor trams for the needs of public transport in the city was signed today in Sarajevo.

The agreement on the modernization of public transport was signed by the Minister of Transport of the Sarajevo Canton Adnan Šteta and Željko Davidović, Sales Director for Central and Eastern Europe of the company Stadler, the supplier of the mentioned trams.
It is a project implemented by the Government of the SC with a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), in the total amount of 34 million euros.
After the ceremonial act of signing the mentioned contract, Minister Šteta stated that this is a generational project and the largest investment in public transport in the last 40 years in Sarajevo.
He reminded that in addition to this, the procurement of 25 new trolleybuses has also been agreed whose delivery will start at the beginning of next year, as well as the reconstruction of the tram tracks that recently began on the section Ilidža - Nedžarići.
-In addition to these three projects, together with the EBRD and the EIB we are working on the development of new projects, namely the construction of a tram line from Ilidža to Hrasnica, expansion of the trolleybus network to Vogošća- said Šteta, adding that additional procurement of trams and trolleybuses has been agreed, in addition to the mentioned 15 and 25, respectively.
The signing of the Agreement was welcomed by the representatives of the EIB, the EBRD and Stadler, expressing the expectation that the cooperation within the mentioned projects will be successfully continued.
EIB Director for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro Sandrine Friscia pointed out that the EIB "as the European Union's climate bank, wants to help the region move to more sustainable transport, which will result in a cleaner environment to mitigate climate change."
Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Stadler Dr. Ansgar Brockmeyer reminded that Sarajevo is one of the first cities on the European continent to introduce tram traffic, stating that the new trams, which will be delivered to KS, rely on the latest technologies.
The new trams, which will be at disposal to the citizens of Sarajevo, have wider doors, and, as it was explained, they are low-floor vehicles with only one step, with flexible wheels and drive that 'protects' the rails, and reduced noise and vibration levels, as well as lower energy consumption and adequate air conditioning.
As planned, the delivery of new trams, in accordance with the Agreement, should start 24 months after its signing, i.e., in September or October 2023, and be completed by the summer of 2024.
In December last year, the SC government selected five potential bidders for the purchase of new trams, and the bids were submitted by a consortium of Stadler Polska from Poland and Stadler Rail Valencia from Spain, Durmazlar Makina Sanayi ve Ticaret Anonim Sirketi from Turkey, CAF from Spain, Škoda Transportation from the Czech Republic and Alstom from France.
In addition to the procurement of new trams, the Ministry of Transport also initiated the reconstruction of the tram tracks and the works within that project began on August 26 that will include the renovation of 21.4 kilometers of the tram network in Sarajevo.&nbsp;

As planned, the delivery of new trams, in accordance with the Agreement, should start 24 months after its signing, i.e., in September or October 2023., and be completed by the summer of 2024.

In the past 24 hours, 2,584 samples were registered with the Public Health Institute of the Federation of B&amp;H, of which 527 were positive for SARS-CoV-2.

A total of 803,448 samples have been tested so far, and SARS-CoV-2 has been confirmed in 140,819 individuals.
In the past 24 hours, seven deaths were reported in the Federation of B&amp;H.
The total number of deaths in the Federation of B&amp;H is 5,605.
In the last 24 hours, 784 laboratory samples were tested at the Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Srpska, and coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) was confirmed in 364 people.
In the last 24 hours, four deaths were reported to the Republika Srpska Institute of Public Health.
So far, 66,991 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Republika Srpska, and a total of 3,869 people who have been tested for coronavirus have died.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that the United States' 20-year campaign in Afghanistan ended in "only tragedies, only losses." 

The Russian leader has a track record of criticising Western countries for trying to impose their values on non-Western nations.
Moscow has regularly slammed the US policy in Afghanistan, which is now controlled by the Taliban after their takeover this month ahead of the American pullout on August 31. 
Putin said Wednesday that the US army tried to "engrain their norms" in war-ravaged Afghanistan for two decades, which he characterised as a futile exercise. 
-The result is only tragedies, only losses for those that did it -- for the US -- and even more so for the people who live on Afghan territory- he said.
It is "impossible to impose anything from outside", he said. 
He was speaking at a meeting with teenagers in the Russian far eastern city of Vladivostok to mark the start of the school year. 
Last week Putin said Russia would not interfere in Afghanistan and that Moscow had learned from the Soviet occupation of the country. 
He has also complained about Western countries trying to place Afghan refugees in Moscow-allied Central Asian states.
Moscow has been cautiously optimistic about the new leadership in Kabul, saying it would not meddle in domestic affairs.

Google on Wednesday said it is appealing a decision by France's competition watchdog to hand it a 500-million-euro ($590 million) fine in a row with news outlets over the use of their content under EU copyright rules.

-We disagree with some of the legal elements, and consider the amount of the fine to be disproportionate compared to the efforts we have put in place to reach a deal and respect the new law- Sebastien Missoffe, head of Google France, said in a statement.
The fine, issued by the French Competition Authority in July, was the biggest in the agency's history for a failure to comply with one of its rulings. 
The watchdog said Google had failed to negotiate "in good faith" with media companies in a long-running legal battle over the internet giant's use of snippets of articles, photos and videos in search results. 
The row has centred on claims that Google has used this content in its search results without adequate compensation, despite the seismic shift of global advertising revenues towards the search giant over the past two decades.
In April last year, the French competition authority ordered Google to negotiate "in good faith" with media groups after it refused to comply with a 2019 European Union law governing digital copyright.
The so-called "neighbouring rights" aim to ensure that news publishers are compensated when their work is shown on websites, search engines and social media platforms.
Last September, French news publishers including Agence France-Presse (AFP) filed a complaint with regulators, saying Google was refusing to move forward on paying to display content in web searches.
While Google insists it has made progress, the French regulator said the company's behaviour "indicates a deliberate, elaborate and systematic lack of respect" for its order to negotiate in good faith. 
The Competition Authority rebuked Google for failing to "have a specific discussion" with media companies about neighbouring rights during negotiations over its Google Showcase news service, which launched late last year.
Missoffe insisted Wednesday that Google "recognises neighbouring rights, and we remain committed to signing agreements in France".
-We have extended our offers to nearly 1,200 publishers and modified aspects of our contracts," he said, adding that the company has "shared data demanded of us in order to conform to the Competition Authority's decision.-

Israel on Tuesday recorded its highly daily coronavirus case tally of nearly 11,000 new infections, amid a surge caused by the highly transmissible Delta variant as schools prepare to re-open. 

The previous high came on January 18, with 10,118 cases.
Despite Tuesday's 10,947 confirmed cases, Israel is pressing ahead with plans to fully open its school system on Wednesday as it tries to boost vaccination rates. 
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, a critic of the cycle of lockdowns implemented by his predecessor Benjamin Netanyahu, has maintained that the surge can be controlled through inoculation and protective measures such as masks. 
His government has encouraged all residents aged 12 and above to get a third get jab of the PfizerBioNTech vaccine.
About 60 percent of Israel's 9.3 million residents have received two shots of the vaccine, including 80 percent of adults. 
Israel was in December one of the first countries to launch a national vaccination campaign, which brought daily infections down to a trickle and allowed the lifting in June of nearly all pandemic restrictions. 
Several measures have since been reimposed, including in-door mask wearing, limits on gatherings and the need to present proof of vaccination for entry to certain facilities. 
Bennett has said that the rollout of the booster shot programme was showing results, notably by restricting the rise in the of hospitalisations.&nbsp;

Israel registers record daily coronavirus cases

Switzerland said Tuesday it had rejected a request from Russia to extradite a Russian businessman, who is already fighting an extradition to the United States over suspicions of large-scale insider trading.

The Swiss justice ministry confirmed Swiss media reports that it had recently rejected a Russian request to extradite Vladislav Klyushin.
In an email to AFP, a ministry spokeswoman explained that "the facts described in the request are not punishable under Swiss law," adding that it had informed Russian authorities on August 12 that "the request had been rejected".
Klyushin, who stands accused of "insider trading in the tens of millions of dollars together with several accomplices", was arrested in the Swiss canton of Wallis in March.
According to Russian opposition media, the businessman was very close to senior Kremlin official Alexey Gromov. 
He reportedly heads several companies, including the M13 group which specialises in IT solutions for media monitoring and cyber-security consulting.
The justice ministry said it had received an extradition request from Russia on April 7.
That was followed by a US request on April 19, "based on the bilateral extradition treaty between Switzerland and the United States."
Bern agreed to the US request on June 24, despite protests from Klyushin, who has appealed the decision to Switzerland's highest court.

Vietnam on Tuesday announced an amnesty for more than 3,000 prisoners ahead of the country's independence anniversary.

Prisoners jailed for corruption, drugs and other criminal offences are among those eligible for an early release, and the list includes 21 foreigners, according to deputy minister of public security Le Quoc Hung.
Hung refused to say how many political prisoners would be freed, insisting "there are no prisoners on political charges in Vietnam".
Human Rights Watch says more than 130 political prisoners are behind bars in communist Vietnam, as of May this year, and the country has a reputation for levelling harsh punishments against government critics and dissidents.
In recent years the hardline administration has tried to stamp out dissent and arrest critics, especially those posting on social media platforms.
The country bans all independent media outlets, and is ranked 175th out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders 2020 press freedom index.
The president's office said this was the first amnesty in four years, and inmates will be released from Wednesday.

The British government signed a joint statement Sunday in conjunction with the international community committing itself to ensure the safe passage of Afghan nationals seeking to leave Afghanistan beyond an Aug. 31 deadline.

The statement was published by Downing Street shortly after Taliban officials in Kabul sent reassurances to the international community that those eligible Afghans seeking to leave the country after this week’s deadline will be given safe passage and allowed to leave the crisis-stricken nation.
-We are all committed to ensuring that our citizens, nationals and residents, employees, Afghans who have worked with us and those who are at risk can continue to travel freely to destinations outside Afghanistan- the statement said.
-We have received assurances from the Taliban that all foreign nationals and any Afghan citizen with travel authorization from our countries will be allowed to proceed in a safe and orderly manner to points of departure and travel outside the country- it added.
The government will continue issuing travel documents to designated Afghans and will hold the Taliban to account for their statements made and commitments promised. The government also confirmed the statements released by the Taliban.
According to reports on the ground, a number of British citizens remain waiting at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul in the hope of being evacuated despite the UK’s evacuation mission -- Operation Pitting -- having come to an end on Saturday. Video footage on Twitter has shown a number of people waving UK passports and calling for help.
The government has advised those Afghans looking to flee to cross into neighboring countries, but it is unclear how such routes will be taken and if such a journey would be safe for those willing to take it.
UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is to use a US-chaired meeting with high-level ministers from Turkey, Qatar, NATO and the G7 to make clear the importance of holding the Taliban to account for their statements of safe passage and the upholding of human rights in the country.
Uncertainty and insecurity are rising in Kabul following a terrorist attack Thursday that killed more than a 100 people, including three British nationals and 12 US servicemen. The attack was claimed by the Daesh/ISIS terrorist group’s Afghan affiliate ISIS-K. ​​​​​​​

The foundation stone for the construction of the detention unit complex of the Sarajevo Penitentiary, financed by the European Union from the IPA funds, was laid today in Blažuj.

On the slopes of Mount Igman, in the past eight months, high-level security facilities have already been built to accommodate detainees and partly convicted persons, under the project funded by the Government of the Federation of B&amp;H.
The facilities in question are made with the most modern method and contemporary security systems will be incorporated into them. The price of the complete complex exceeds ten million euros.
The Director of the Sarajevo Penitentiary Complex, Faruk Zubčević, said that the project was of great importance to the FB&amp;H Government.

France will be providing 10 million doses of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines for Africa over the next three months, President Emmanuel Macron's office announced on Monday.

The jabs "will be allocated and distributed in the framework of the (African Union's) African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) and Covax," the partnership for equitable vaccine rollout, it said.
-The (Covid-19) pandemic can only be overcome through intense cooperation- Macron said in a statement that emphasised "our solid partnership" with the AU.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa -- who with Macron has strongly attacked unequal access to vaccines -- hailed the announcement as a "strong and welcome gesture of human solidarity and political cooperation at a time when the world most needs it."
AVAT is a means of enabling group purchases of vaccines by AU members to help them meet at least 50 percent of their needs. Covax aims at helping countries meet the shortfall through donations.
The statement by Macron's office said that enough jabs had now been purchased through AVAT to enable vaccination of 400 million people in Africa -- a third of the continent's population -- by September 2022, at a cost of three billion dollars.
Separately, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday that the Republic of Congo had received more than 300,000 vaccines doses from the United States, its first under Covax.
The donation amounts to 302,400 jabs of the single-dose Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine, the agency's African branch said on Twitter.
Congo, also called Congo-Brazzaville to differentiate it from its much bigger neighbour the Democratic Republic of Congo, began vaccinations in April using the Chinese formula Sinopharm and Russia's Sputnik.
But uptake of these vaccines has been very low, and vaccine hesitancy or suspicion are widespread. As of mid-August, less than two percent of Congo's eligible population had been inoculated.
On August 15, President Denis Sassou Nguesso issued an appeal for the public to get vaccinated, saying collective immunity was "the only path to safety" in the fight against the pandemic.
