Tennis great Serena Williams will not play in the 2021 US Open due to a hamstring injury, the world famous athlete said on Wednesday.

-After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring- Williams said on Instagram.
The US Open sent get well wishes to the 39-year-old US star.

The 2021 US Open, which is the final Grand Slam of the year, will begin on Aug. 30.
Williams, who ranked 22nd in the globe, won 23 Grand Slam titles, including six US Open, in women's singles.

Nishiya starred in the tricks section to score 15.26 and give the hosts a clean-sweep of the street discipline as skateboarding makes its Olympic debut.
Her performance mirrored that of Japan teammate Yuto Horigome, who won the men's title with a stunning sequence of tricks on Sunday.
-I'm so glad to become the youngest (Japanese gold medallist) at my first Olympics... tears came to my eyes- Nishiya told reporters after receiving her medal.

Two athletes tested positive for coronavirus in the Tokyo Olympic Village a day after the first case was confirmed in the village, the officials said on Sunday.

The Tokyo Olympic organizing committee announced that 10 people who arrived from abroad to attend the games, including two athletes, a contractor, a media person, and other game-concerned personnel, had tested positive.
They are under a 14-day quarantine period.
No details were provided about the nationality of the athletes and their health situation.
On Saturday, the first case was reported in the village after an individual who worked for the games tested positive for COVID-19.
With the new cases, overall infections related to the Tokyo 2020 since July 1 have risen to 55.
Japan had previously barred international spectators from attending the delayed Olympics, scheduled to be held from July 23 to Aug. 8.
Olympic host city Tokyo entered a state of emergency on Monday until Aug. 22 due to surging COVID-19 infections, which triggered rumors about the cancelation of the games.

The chief of the Tokyo Olympics tried to reassure "worried" athletes on Saturday as the Games Village was hit by its first coronavirus case, six days before the pandemic-delayed event opens.

As thousands of competitors pour into Japan for the Games, which will largely take place without spectators, the positive test for an unnamed person in the Village heightened worries over biosecurity.
About 11,000 athletes and tens of thousands of officials and media are flying in for the Games, which open on Friday in the face of widespread public concern over a possible surge in infections.
The capital remains under a coronavirus state of emergency and has in recent days recorded its highest case numbers since January.
No details were given about the positive test in the Village, one of 15 Games-related cases revealed on Saturday -- the highest figure this month. Japanese media said the infected person came from abroad.
-That was the very first case in the Village that was reported during the screening test- Masa Takaya, spokesman for the Tokyo organising committee, told a press conference.
-Right now this person is confined to a hotel- Takaya said.
Games chief Seiko Hashimoto said she understood the concerns of athletes, who have to contend with coronavirus fears and a strict schedule of testing as well as the pressure of competing.
-Athletes who are coming to Japan are probably very worried. I understand that- she said. -That is the reason why we need to make full disclosure.-

The Olympics were postponed for a year in March last year as Covid-19 spread around the world.

Several athletes have expressed concern over conditions at the rearranged Games, which are marked by ubiquitous temperature checks, hand sanitiser and daily testing.
Australian basketball player Liz Cambage withdrew, fearing for her mental health in the "terrifying" biosecure bubble, and British weightlifter Sarah Davies said: "Genuinely, feels like we're in prison."
Organisers pledged full transparency about cases in the Village, and urged people taking part in the Games to stick by the anti-coronavirus rules.
Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto said competitors would be tested every day "so if someone tests positive, that person will be isolated immediately whether there are any close contacts or not".
Hashimoto added: -We are doing everything to prevent any Covid outbreaks. If we end up with an outbreak we will make sure we have a plan in place to respond.-The Japanese public has been consistently sceptical about the Games with opinion polls showing high levels of opposition. 
About 30 demonstrators chanting "Stop the Olympics" and "Protect lives before Olympics" were blocked by police as they tried to submit protest letters to International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach as he attended talks at a luxury hotel.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said he hoped the Olympics would bring excitement "even without spectators", despite parts of Japan living under a state of emergency.
"Even without spectators, I think it is important to bring excitement... to people in Japan and the world," he said on Nippon TV.

Bundesliga clubs and other German sports venues will be allowed to welcome up to 25,000 spectators from next month, the city of Berlin said Tuesday after a meeting of officials from Germany's 16 states.

Most matches in Germany's top football league were played behind closed doors last season because of the Covid-19 virus.
The new Bundesliga season starts on August 13 and with infection rates having fallen sharply, sports stadiums could be at 50 percent capacity, with the total number per match or event capped at 25,000.
The only exception is reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, where up to 20,000 fans will be allowed into home games at the 75,000-capacity Allianz Arena because officials in Bavaria are allowing only 35 percent of capacity.
The new rules apply until September 11 and amid concerns in Germany about the Delta variant of the coronavirus, incidence rates must not exceed 35 new infections per 100,000 people over the previous seven days.
If that happens, and "the infection cannot be clearly contained", a maximum of 5,000 spectators will be allowed into sports events, German officials warned.
Only fans who can prove they are vaccinated or present a negative test will be allowed into stadiums and hygiene rules must be followed.
An easing of the regulations meant crowds of around 14,000 were allowed to attend Euro 2020 matches at Munich's Allianz Arena over the last three weeks, but fans were largely kept out of German league games last season.

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer on Tuesday urged the British government to reduce the number of fans allowed into Wembley stadium for the final Euro 2020 matches, as fears grow over the spread of the Delta variant.

-I think it's irresponsible for tens of thousands to gather in close proximity" in countries where the "highly contagious" Delta variant is spreading- Seehofer told Germany's Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper.
The appeal comes just hours before a last-16 clash between England and longtime rivals Germany at London's Wembley stadium.
UEFA and the British authorities have said some 45,000 supporters will be allowed to attend the game, equivalent to 50 percent of capacity.
Attendance will be increased to 75 percent of capacity, or more than 60,000 fans, for the semi-finals and final at Wembley, in what will be the largest crowds at a sports event in Britain since the start of the pandemic.
In Germany, where Munich's Allianz Arena has hosted several Euro 2020 matches, the capacity cap has been set at a strict 20 percent -- or around 14,000 spectators.
Seehofer said the 20-percent rule could serve as "a benchmark" to other Euro 2020 venues as well.
Britain is experiencing a surge in new coronavirus cases blamed on the Delta variant that was first detected in India.
Germany has designated Britain as a virus variant risk area, meaning only German nationals or residents are allowed to enter from the UK, barring a few exceptions. 
All UK arrivals, including vaccinated people, have to quarantine for 14 days once in Germany.
Strict travel curbs imposed by both countries are expected to dissuade many German fans from making the trip to England.

India's Olympic body has slammed as "unfair" strict rules imposed by the Japanese government on athletes from several Covid-hit nations for the Tokyo Games starting next month.

Tokyo 2020 organisers said Monday that additional measures will be used to reduce infection risks from several countries, including India, that have seen "significant impact from variants" of Covid-19.
The protocols will involve daily testing of athletes for a week before they depart for Japan and for them to "refrain from coming into contact with other teams for three days after they arrive" in Japan.
But the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said the rules would cause athletes to lose three crucial training days.
-Athletes are allowed to arrive in the Games village only five days before their event- IOA president Narinder Batra and secretary Rajeev Mehta said in a joint statement released on Saturday.
-Now three days will be wasted, this is the time the athletes need to be moving towards their mode to peak... highly unfair for Indian athletes, who have worked hard for five years, to be discriminated against just five days before the Olympics.-The sports administrators said 11 countries, including India, Pakistan and the UK, would be affected.
-Where and when will the athletes have their breakfast, lunch, dinner during these three days, as everyone has food in the Games village food hall where all athletes and officials of other NOCs (National Olympic Committees) are present all the time- the statement added.
Where can athletes train? it asked, because "practice/training areas are never empty and athletes and officials of other NOCs are present all the time."
The Tokyo 2020 organisers said in a statement to AFP that they had received a document from India's Olympic body.
-For participants from areas such as India that have seen significant impact from variants, it is necessary that they follow more stringent rules than those outlined in the (athletes) Playbook, and are similar to the existing border control measures- they added.But the organisers did not clarify whether athletes from the affected countries would be allowed to train in the three days after their arrival.
Batra told AFP last week that Indian athletes will be fully vaccinated before the Games starting July 23. 
The country has eased some lockdown restrictions in recent weeks as it emerges from a brutal surge in infections and deaths in April and May.
The International Olympic Committee said in late May that six countries -- Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka -- had pledged to fully vaccinated their delegations and conduct additional testing.
Some Indian athletes, including javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and wrestler Vinesh Phogat, are training abroad and will travel to Tokyo from their respective locations.
But most of the Olympic team will depart from India.
Despite its huge population, India won just two medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Spanish tennis star Nadal pulls out of Tokyo 2020, Wimbledon

Danish star Christian Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest during his country's Euro 2020 opener last weekend, will have a heart defibrillator implanted, the Danish Football Union (DBU) announced Thursday.

The Inter Milan midfielder collapsed and required CPR during Denmark's game against Finland in Copenhagen where he remains in hospital.
-After Christian has been through different heart examinations it has been decided that he should have an ICD (heart starter)- the Danish football body said in a statement on Twitter.
-This device is necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances- it added. 
DBU provided no details on the potential consequences for the 29-year-old Inter Milan player's future career.
Eriksen "has accepted the solution" and it had also been "confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally who all recommend the same treatment," DBU said.
Players, such as Dutchman Daley Blind, have been able to resume their careers after being fitted with the device, which controls and regulates the heart rate.
The announcement of the medical procedure comes hours before the kick-off to Denmark's next match against Belgium, where a tribute to the Danish number 10 is scheduled to take place in the 10th minute of the match.
