Israeli police on Friday injured at least three Palestinians and detained seven others in Al-Yusufiye cemetery in occupied East Jerusalem.

Eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency that the Israeli police beat Palestinians who tried to enter the cemetery, which Israel has been razing to build a national park.
Israeli police forces barred Palestinians from entering a part of the cemetery where Israeli authorities have been conducting excavations for several months.
On Thursday, the Israeli municipality in Jerusalem and the Parks Authority decided to close the part intended to be converted into a biblical garden.
According to eyewitnesses, the police beat a Palestinian and detained him in front of his daughter, who was crying before he was released.
The occupation police fired stun grenades and tear gas at hundreds of Palestinians who were passing near the cemetery after Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said, in a statement, that its crews recorded "three injuries with sound bombs during the occupation forces' attack on those in the Yusufiye cemetery in Jerusalem."
The injured were taken to the hospital for treatment.

For its part, the Israeli police said in a statement that dozens of Palestinians "pelted the police with stones, and seven suspects were arrested for throwing stones."

Since the morning hours, the Israeli police closed a number of streets surrounding the Old City and the road separating the east and west parts of Jerusalem, due to an Israeli marathon.
Palestinians expressed their displeasure at the closure of streets in East Jerusalem, which impeded the arrival of worshipers at Al-Aqsa Mosque to perform Friday prayers, according to an Anadolu Agency correspondent.
Israeli authorities continue to bulldoze a part of al-Yusufiye cemetery to establish a biblical garden, despite the protests of the Palestinians.
Al-Yusufiye cemetery dates back hundreds of years and contains the graves of Palestinian citizens.

The US Treasury Department said on Friday it imposed sanctions on a network of entities and individuals, including a top commander, in connection with Iran’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) program.

In a statement, the department claimed the targeted companies and individuals were providing critical support to the UAV programs of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its expeditionary unit, the IRGC Qods Force (IRGC-QF).
The Treasury said its Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated Saeed Aghajani, the commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force (IRGC ASF) UAV Command.
- The IRGC-QF has used and proliferated lethal UAVs for use by Iran-supported groups, including Hizballah, HAMAS, Kata’ib Hizballah, and the Houthis, and to Ethiopia, where the escalating crisis threatens to destabilize the broader region," it said. "Lethal UAVs have been used in attacks on international shipping and on US forces. -Other individuals and entities included IRGC Brigadier General Abdollah Mehrabi, the chief of the IRGC ASF Research and Self-Sufficiency Jihad Organization (SSJO), who has procured UAV engines for the organization from Oje Parvaz Mado Nafar Company, an entity he co-owns and for which he has served as chairman, the Treasury said.
Mado Company and its managing director Yousef Aboutalebi have procured UAV engines for the IRGC Navy and entities supporting weapons development for the Iranian military, including Iran’s Qods Aviation Industries (QAI) and Aircraft Manufacturing Industries (HESA), which is a US-sanctioned company that has provided UAVs to the IRGC, it added.
Sanctions also included Kimia Part Sivan Company (KIPAS), an Iran-based company that has worked with Iran’s IRGC-QF to improve the force’s UAV program, said the Treasury, adding KIPAS officials have conducted UAV flight tests for the IRGC-QF and have provided technical assistance to IRGC-QF UAVs transferred to Iraq for use in IRGC-QF operations.
It said KIPAS has procured valuable UAV components for onward use by the IRGC, and Mohammad Ebrahim Zargar Tehrani has helped KIPAS source these components from companies outside of Iran.
"Iran’s proliferation of UAVs across the region threatens international peace and stability. Iran and its proxy militants have used UAVs to attack US forces, our partners, and international shipping," Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo said in a statement.

Eight Sunni civilians were killed by Shia gunmen in an apparent revenge attack in Iraq’s eastern Diyala province on Wednesday, according to a local police officer.

The attack came one day after suspected Daesh/ISIS militants attacked the predominantly Shia village of al-Rashad in Diyala Tuesday evening, killing at least 15 people and injuring 13 others.
- Hundreds of gunmen from the Bani Tamim [Shia] tribe attacked the Sunni village of Al-Imam in response to Tuesday’s attack - the police officer told Anadolu Agency, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.
He said a number of houses and farmlands were set on fire during the attack.
In recent months, Daesh/ISIS terrorists have escalated their attacks, especially in the area between Kirkuk, Salahuddin, and Diyala, known as the Triangle of Death.
In 2017, Iraq declared victory over Daesh/ISIS by reclaiming all territories the terrorist group controlled since the summer of 2014, about one-third of the country’s territory.
The group, however, still maintains sleeper cells in large areas of Iraq and occasionally launches attacks.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke late Tuesday with Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok after he was released from army custody, said the State Department. 

In a statement, spokesman Ned Price said Blinken welcomed Hamdok's release and reiterated his call on Sudanese military forces to free all civilian leaders in detention and to ensure their safety.
- He also expressed his deep concern about the ongoing military takeover and repeated the imperative for military forces to use restraint and avoid violence in responding to demonstrators - said Price.
Deposed by the military, Hamdok was taken back to his home in the capital Khartoum’s Kafouri neighborhood, with his residence under heavy military security, according to the Alsudani news portal.
Hamdok was reportedly earlier held at the home of the head of Sudan’s ruling military council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
- The secretary emphasized U.S. support for the civilian-led transition to democracy and for a return to the principles of Sudan’s transitional framework, as laid out in the 2019 Constitutional Declaration and the 2020 Juba Peace Agreement - said Price.
- He noted the growing chorus of international voices condemning the military takeover and supporting the calls by the Sudanese people for civilian leadership, democracy and peace - he added.
Hamdok and a number of ministers in his civilian government were detained by the Sudanese military on Monday.
Al-Burhan on Monday announced a state of emergency, dissolved the transitional sovereign council and the government and suspended some provisions of the constitutional document outlining the political transition in Sudan.
After a failed military coup last month, deep tensions erupted between the military and the civilian administration in Sudan following rival protests in Khartoum.
Before the military takeover, Sudan was administered by a sovereign council of military and civilian officials which was overseeing the transition period until elections slated for 2023 as part of a precarious power-sharing pact between the military and the Forces for Freedom and Change coalition.

Ethiopia on Tuesday began its second week of aerial bombardment in Tigray, the northernmost region of the Horn of Africa nation that saw an insurgency against the federal government.

- A special forces training center of the terrorist group Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has been the target of Tuesday’s airstrike - the government's communication service told Anadolu Agency.
It said: “The center is located at Quiha, just outside of Mekele (capital of the regional state). A large number of the group’s illegally recruited personnel were taking military training at this center.”
Ethiopia claimed the aerial bombardments that began just a week ago were surgical and away from civilian settlements, but a spokesperson for the TPLF, Getachew Reda, claimed a busy market was also hit, killing three civilians and injuring many others.
Last year, the Ethiopian government said that TPLF forces raided the northern command of Ethiopian National Defense Forces, killing soldiers and looting sizable military hardware on Nov. 3. The following day, the Ethiopian government launched a sweeping law enforcement operation against the group’s leaders.
On June 29, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration declared a unilateral cease-fire and withdrew troops from Tigray. The TPLF has been expanding ever since into neighboring regions of Amhara and Afar.
According to the UN, 2 million people were internally displaced and thousands died in the war.

Mohammad Yaqoob, the acting defense minister in Afghanistan's interim Taliban administration, in his first public appearance on Wednesday called on the private sector to contribute toward strengthening the health sector in the war-ravaged country.

Yaqoob is the son of Mullah Omar, the late founder of the Taliban movement who rarely appeared in public.
- God willing, in a year or two, there would be no need for the Afghans to travel abroad for treatment - he said, addressing a gathering at the state-owned Sardar Daud Khan Public Hospital in Kabul, the country's premier health facility for military and civilians.
The Taliban returned to power in August after a 20-year war, and have formed an interim government headed by Hassan Akhund.
Afghanistan's health sector has been shattered by years of war and conflict. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a pause in funding for the Sehatmandi project has left millions of vulnerable Afghans at risk of losing access to essential health care.
It is a multi-donor-funded project that provides access to affordable primary and secondary health care, nutrition and family planning services across all 34 provinces of Afghanistan.
Last month, the Central Emergency Response Fund released $45 million in life-saving assistance to help prevent the country's health care system from collapsing.
This came after WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus met Taliban leaders in Afghanistan to discuss ways and means of assisting the country.
Tedros had said Afghanistan’s health system is on the brink of collapse, and “unless urgent action is taken, the country faces an imminent humanitarian catastrophe."

A day after a massive cyberattack disrupted the country’s fuel distribution system, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi called for robust measures to "anticipate and prevent" such attacks.

Addressing a Cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday, Raisi said the aim of the attack was to "disrupt people's lives," adding that preventing such attacks is essential.
He also urged the Oil Ministry to take necessary action to "compensate people" for the disruption caused by the attack.
After the meeting, Raisi accompanied by other senior officials visited the ministry to review a probe into the attack and its causes.
The attack took place around 11 am on Tuesday, causing widespread disruption and chaos at gas stations across Iran. It targeted the software that supports a smart card payment for subsidized fuel, used widely in Iran.
Initially, officials attributed the malfunction to "technical glitches", but hours later it was confirmed to be a high-intensity cyberattack.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for it. Importantly, the attack came on the heels of the anniversary of November 2019 protests in Iran over fuel price hikes.
Without naming anyone, Raisi said attempts are being made to make people angry by sowing disorder and disruption.
- The purpose of this action was to disrupt people's lives so that they can achieve their specific goals - he asserted, without elaborating.
Raisi said Iran must be "fully prepared" to deal with cyber warfare and to "prevent the enemy from creating problems" in people's lives.
Iran has been hit by a series of cyberattacks in recent years, mostly targeting nuclear facilities, petroleum factories, railway stations, and ports.
Officials have on many occasions blamed Israel for the attacks.

Sudan’s Foreign Minister Mariam al-Sadiq sent messages to her counterparts around the world condemning the "military coup" in her country and the detention of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and ministers in the transitional civilian government.

In her message, al-Sadiq vowed “to resist the military coup in Sudan with all peaceful means”, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
- The legitimate head of the government, Abdalla Hamdok, and members of his government are still held in an unknown location - the minister said in the message.

Officials at Iran's oil ministry told state media that they were holding emergency meetings to fix the problem that has forced the closure of gas stations across the country, including in capital Tehran.
The cyberattack has targeted the software that supports a smart card payment for subsidized fuel, used widely in Iran.
The attack appears to be timed with the anniversary of the November 2019 violent protests in Iran over fuel price hikes, which claimed many lives.
Iran's Interior Minister Ahmed Wahedi, trying to allay public fears, said in a statement that there was "no plan to increase fuel prices" this time, asking people "not to worry".
He attributed the disruption of fuel distribution services to a "technical glitch", which he assured will be "fixed soon".
Mostafa Akhi, a spokesman for parliament's energy commission, also ruled out fuel price hikes, urging people not to rush to gas stations until the problem is solved.
Anadolu Agency spoke to people in the capital Tehran, who said many gas stations remained closed hours after the cyberattack was first reported on Tuesday.
- I have been waiting to refuel my car at a gas station in north Tehran, but we have been asked to wait until the problem is fixed - said Ali Zamani, a private taxi driver.
The disruption has caused long lines in front of gas stations in the capital city.
There have been a series of cyberattacks in recent years, targeting Iran's nuclear sites, petroleum facilities, railway stations and ports. Officials have mostly blamed arch-enemy Israel for the attacks.
Meanwhile, in a related development, the semi-government news agency ISNA put out a statement on Tuesday, saying its website was also targeted in a cyberattack.
It came after the news website had published a story about the disruption of fuel services.

Israel’s designation of six Palestinian civil society organizations as “terrorist organizations” is an attack on human rights defenders, freedom of association, and the right to public participation, and should be immediately revoked, the UN human rights chief said Tuesday.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said the organizations are some of the “most reputable human rights and humanitarian groups in the occupied Palestinian territory” that have worked closely with the UN for decades.
- Claiming rights before a UN or other international body is not an act of terrorism, advocating for the rights of women in the occupied Palestinian territory is not terrorism, and providing legal aid to detained Palestinians is not terrorism - Bachelet said in a statement.
She asserted that the designation decisions under the Israeli Counter-Terrorism Law of 2016 are vague or unsubstantiated.
They included peaceful and legitimate human rights activities, such as providing legal aid to Palestinians in detention, organizing activities for women in the West Bank, and “promoting steps against Israel in the international arena.”

The rights chief reiterated that counter-terrorism legislation must not be applied to legitimate human rights and humanitarian work.

The banning of organizations must not be used to suppress or deny the right to freedom of association, quash political dissent, silence unpopular views, or limit the peaceful activities of civil society.
The national authorities responsible for proscribing organizations must comply fully with international human rights obligations, said the rights office.
These include respecting the principles of legal certainty, proportionality, equality, and non-discrimination.
- Restricting the space for legitimate activities under international law is not only wrong but counter-productive, as it risks limiting the space for peaceful dialogue - said Bachelet.
She noted that the organizations include some of the critical partners of the UN Human Rights Office and they face far-reaching consequences due to “this arbitrary decision,” as do those who fund them and work with them.
Bachelet said: “And the crucial work they perform for thousands of Palestinians risks being halted or severely restricted.”
The published designation decisions by the Israeli Minister of Defense state that the organizations have become the “arm” of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
It says that they obtained financial resources, which in practice reached the “(PFLP) terror activity” or supported their activities.
The rights office said there is no evidence presented to support these accusations, no information on the type of alleged “PFLP terror activity,” nor has any public process been conducted to establish the allegations.
The designations against the six organizations on Oct. 19 are the latest in a long-running series of actions to undermine and restrict human rights defenders and civil society organizations working for the human rights of Palestinians.
These include using military regulations to declare groups unlawful, said the rights office.
The organizations are Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association; Al Haq; Defense for Children International – Palestine; Union of Agricultural Work Committees; Bisan Center for Research and Development; and the Union of Palestinian Women’s Committees.

Astronomers said that they may have discovered a potential planet outside the Milky Way galaxy.

According to a report by ABC News, astronomers may have detected a possible planet by Nasa's Chandra X-Ray Telescope in the spiral galaxy Messier 51 (M51), also known as the Whirlpool Galaxy.
The study was published in the journal Nature Astronomy on Tuesday.
The planet, known as M51-ULS-1b, is believed to be around 28 million light-years away from the Milky Way and the size of Saturn, according to astronomers.
The planet could be orbiting a neutron star or black hole at a distance of nearly twice that of Saturn from the Sun.
The researchers pointed out that the planet takes roughly 70 years to cross in front of its binary partners (orbit its suns) and the probability of observing this planet from the earth is very low.
- There's something going on, and it could be a planet, but we'd have to be incredibly fortunate to have captured it at just the right time - Jonti Horner, an astronomer and astrobiologist at the University of Southern Queensland, said.
- If you took observations a million times at random over that 70 years, only on four of those times would you see this thing transiting it - Horner added.
The researchers said more data is needed to verify the existence of this planet.

The head of Sudan’s ruling military council, Gen. Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, declared a state of emergency and dissolved the transitional sovereign council and government.

The move came hours after the military arrested Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok and ministers in the civilian government.
We are declaring "a state of emergency in the country, dissolving the Sovereign Council and the cabinet and freezing the work of the Empowerment Committee," al-Burhan said in a televised speech.
Al-Burhan also announced the suspension of some provisions of the constitutional document outlining political transition in Sudan.
According to Sudanese Information Ministry, a military force arrested Hamdok early Monday after he refused to support what it described as a "coup".
Until today, Sudan was ruled by a Sovereign Council of military and civilian officials, which oversees the transition period until elections slated for 2023, as part of a precarious power-sharing pact between the military and the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) coalition.
Al-Burhan underlined his commitment to the Juba Peace Agreement signed with armed movements in October 2020.
He said an independent government of technocrats would be formed to rule the country until elections in July 2023.
- We will continue to work to create the atmosphere for conducting the elections - he said.
Al-Burhan defended his moves as aimed at “protecting" Sudan from the dangers of “incitement” by political forces to cause chaos.
- What the country is going through has become a real danger - the military chief warned, citing divisions in the country.
- The transitional phase will continue to reach an elected government, and that the armed forces are moving forward with the democratic transformation - he said, noting that the youth of the revolution in Sudan will be involved in the process.

Sudan general declares state of emergency, dissolves gov’t

Shavkat Mirziyoyev has been re-elected as president of Uzbekistan, the country's election commission said Monday.

Mirziyoyev, a candidate for the Liberal Democratic Party, received 80.1% of the vote, Zayniddin Nizamhocayev, chairman of the Central Election Commission, announced at a news conference.
- According to the electoral law in the country, the candidate who receives more than half of the votes cast will be considered the winner - Nizamhocayev said.
More than 16.21 million people cast their votes in the presidential elections held on Sunday, he added, noting that the voter turn-out was 80.4%.
- The presidential election, which took place in a real competitive environment between five political parties and their candidates, is a clear indication that freedom and democracy are increasingly being consolidated in Uzbekistan - he said.
No complaints about irregularities in the election were reported, he went on to say.
The country with a population of about 35 million people, has a total of more than 20 million registered voters. As many as 10,760 polling stations were set up across the country for the presidential election.
Other candidates included, Narzulla Oblomuradov from Ecology Party, Maksuda Vorisova from Peoples Democratic Party, Alishir Kadirov from National Revival Democratic Party, and Bahrom Abdulhalimov from Justice Social Democratic Party.
Over 1,000 international observers from more than 50 countries followed the elections, as well as organizations including the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Turkish Council and the Commonwealth of Independent States.
In September 2016, when the first president of the country, Islam Karimov, who ruled for 27 years, passed away, Mirziyoyev won in the early elections held in December of the same year, receiving 88.61% of the vote of public against his three opponents.
