Egyptian activist and journalist Esraa Abdel-Fattah, one of the symbols of the 2011 revolution, has been freed after nearly 22 months in pre-trial detention, lawyer Khaled Ali said Sunday.

Ali, as well as friends of Abdel-Fattah, posted photographs online of her being released from prison.
In 2008, Abdel-Fattah created an "April 6" Facebook page in support of striking workers and to call for political reforms, at the start of the mobilisation of mass protests that would lead to the toppling of president Hosni Mubarak three years later.
Abdel-Fattah, 43, was arrested in October 2019 on charges of "spreading false news" and "collaborating with a terrorist group".
Her detention sparked international condemnation, with the US calling it "scandalous".
Abdel-Fattah, who was also previously jailed under Mubarak, walked free just hours after a surprise decision by the prosecution to release her.
She had opposed the Muslim Brotherhood when they took power in Egypt in 2012 and backed the 2013 protests that led to the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.
Under Egyptian law, pre-trial detention can be extended for up to two years.
On Saturday evening, the prosecution also decided to release activist Abdel Nasser Ismail, leader of the Popular Alliance party, who was arrested in September 2019 for "participation in a terrorist group", according to lawyers.
Egyptian journalist and opposition figure Gamal El-Gammal, arrested on his return from Turkey in February, was also freed.
The United States this week warned Egypt not to target rights campaigners, saying the issue would be a factor in arms sales to its ally.
Since President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi took power in 2014, the former army chief has launched a sweeping crackdown on dissent.

Five people, including the driver of a bus, were killed at the scene in the northern Rangpur district while one died in hospital. Two injured are in critical condition, Amiruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Mithapukur police station, told Anadolu Agency.
The accident took place on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway in Rangpur's Mithapukur sub-district area when a Dhaka-bound bus and the other bound for the northern Dinajpur district collided while moving in the opposite direction, he said.
At least 12 people were admitted to the Rangpur government hospital while many others were provided treatment at other facilities, according to the official. Fire service and police members were at the scene as the traffic was disrupted after the accident.

Shortly after, it tweeted that "two additional victims associated with this incident walked into area hospitals for treatment of gunshot wounds.
-This is currently an active investigation and it appears there is no ongoing threat at this time- it added.
Two AFP journalists who were at the game said some spectators had rushed for the exits after hearing the gunshots, while others remained in their seats at the announcer's initial urging.

Saudi Arabia has officially allowed shops to remain open during the five daily Muslim prayers, revoking a 40-year ban in the kingdom.

The permit came “in accordance with the precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, to preserve the health and safety of shoppers and customers, and to prevent the buildup of large crowds and gatherings and waiting for a long time during the closing times of prayers,” the Federation of Saudi Chambers said in a statement cited by the state-run Al-Ekhbariya channel.
The move will allow shops to remain open and to “engage in commercial and economic activities throughout working hours”, in a way that will “enable workers, shoppers, and customers to perform prayers."
The decision annuls a 40-year ban that was adopted based on the executive regulations of the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in 1980.
Among several other articles, the committee enforced daily prayer attendance and ordered the closing of shops during prayer times.
The move is the latest in a series of extensive economic, political, cultural, and social reforms launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman aimed at modernizing the kingdom. His ambitious Vision 2030 agenda seeks to diversify the economy away from its dependence on oil as well as attract foreign talent and investment.

Thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands have fled their homes, while the economic impact on one of the world's poorest countries has been devastating.
Abductions have been frequent, both of Malians and of foreigners.

Muslim pilgrims began arriving in the holy city Mecca on Saturday to perform Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, the Saudi media reported.​​​​​​​

According to Arab News, an English language daily, Saudi Arabia is allowing 60,000 fully vaccinated residents to take part in this year’s Hajj.
Saudi authorities tasked over 500 workers to serve pilgrims as they perform the initial tawaf, circling around Kaaba upon entering the mosque premises, the daily said.
This year’s Hajj, with participants chosen through a lottery, is larger than scaled back version staged in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic but significantly smaller compared to normal times, it added.
Last year, Saudi authorities limited the Hajj to 10,000 Muslims due to the pandemic.
In 2019, around 2.4 million pilgrims performed Hajj, according to official estimates.
The Hajj, the pilgrimage to Islam's holiest site Kaaba in the city of Mecca, is one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims are required to perform it at least once in their life if they have the means to do so.

Four Iraqi soldiers were killed on Saturday in an attack by suspected ISIS/Daesh terrorists in the northern Kirkuk province, according to a local police officer.

-Unidentified gunmen likely to belong to ISIS/Daesh terrorist group opened fire on a military checkpoint west of Kirkuk- the officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Anadolu Agency.
He said the Iraqi army has launched a manhunt for the attackers.
In recent months, suspected Daesh/ISIS terrorists have stepped up attacks, particularly in the area between Kirkuk, Saladin (north), and Diyala (east), known as the "Triangle of Death."
In 2017, Iraq declared victory over Daesh/ISIS by reclaiming all of its territories – about a third of the country’s area – invaded by the terror group in 2014.
But the terrorist group still maintains sleeper cells in large areas of Iraq and periodically launches attacks. The Iraqi army continues to carry out frequent operations against the group in parts of the country.

The UN has called on the Israeli authorities to halt its demolition and confiscation of Palestinian property.

-Our humanitarian colleagues in the occupied Palestinian Territory tell us that on Wednesday, in the community of Ras al-Tin in Ramallah governorate, 84 Palestinians lost their homes when Israeli forces confiscated at least 49 structures- Farhan Haq, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said in a briefing.
He noted that Palestinians use the area in the summer as a grazing land “but are now at heightened risk of forcible transfer from the area.”
Haq also said that the Israeli forces “dismantled and confiscated a residential structure [Thursday] in Humsa Al Baqi’in the northern Jordan Valley.”
The spokesperson reiterated the UN's call on Israel to stop its violations “and adhere to its obligations as an occupying power under international humanitarian law.”
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Israeli forces demolished at least 421 Palestinian-owned structures in the occupied West Bank this year.

A demonstrator was shot dead during protests against water shortages in drought-hit southwestern Iran, state media reported Saturday, with an official blaming the death on "opportunists and rioters".

The demonstrator was killed in the Khuzestan province town of Shadegan, the official IRNA news agency said.
-Last night (Friday), a number of Shadegan's people had gathered to protest water shortages due to the drought, during which opportunists and rioters shot dead one of the demonstrators- the county's acting governor, Omid Sabripour, told IRNA.
Sabripour said the perpetrators "sought to agitate the people by shooting in the air" and a "young Shadegan resident" was shot in the process.
In separate comments to the ISNA news agency, Sabripour said the fire was directed at both the demonstrators and security forces.
He added that the victim was a "30-year-old passer-by" and that those responsible were identified and some arrested last night, with a manhunt under way for the others.
A persistent drought in Khuzestan province has led to tensions over water since late March, IRNA reported.
Iran has endured repeated droughts over the past decade, particularly in the south.
Earlier this month, President Hassan Rouhani said this year's drought was "unprecedented" with average rainfall down 52 percent compared to the previous year.
Earlier this week, the government sent a delegation to Khuzestan to tackle the water shortage.
The province is Iran's main oil-producing region and one its wealthiest.
It is also one of the few areas of mainly Shiite Iran to have a large Sunni Arab minority, which has frequently complained of marginalisation.
In 2019, the province was a hotspot of anti-government protests that had shaken other areas of the Islamic republic.
Farsi-language media based abroad said security forces had cracked down on protesters demonstrating against severe water shortages on Thursday, but domestic media played down the reports.
Over the years, blistering summer heatwaves and seasonal sandstorms blowing in from Saudi Arabia and neighbouring Iraq have dried up Khuzestan's once fertile plains.

Despite a rash of violence, South Africa fought hard to get its democracy, and will not allow anyone to derail it, said the nation’s president on Friday.

-We will not allow anyone to hijack our democracy, to destroy our democracy ...This is a hard-fought democracy- Cyril Ramaphosa told volunteers cleaning the streets of Durban in televised remarks.
Ramaphosa is currently visiting parts of the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province, where protests begun last Thursday after the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma for contempt of court.
The protests escalated into incidents of sporadic looting and spread to Johannesburg, the country’s largest city.
Major shopping venues in KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg were ransacked and some set on fire.
Vehicles and trucks were also burned by groups of protesters calling for Zuma's release.
Zuma, 79, started serving a prison term for contempt of court in KwaZulu-Natal last Wednesday.

<h2>‘This is not what we wanted to see’</h2>

Ramaphosa conceded that the government could have done better in dealing with the incidents but said they were overwhelmed by the situation and did not want to use force that could have resulted in more mayhem.

-We regret obviously, the situation that has resulted into this- he said, flanked by several minister and provincial leaders.
-This is not what we want to see in our country and obviously we are going to have to re-examine everything that we do in defense of our people, the assets of our country.-He said the government is now rolling out more 25,000 soldiers on the streets to bring order and help the police.
Ramaphosa also lauded his predecessor Zuma for having complied with a court ruling by turning himself in.
He said the government is considering and assessing a range of proposals on the former leader, but did not explain further. This could mean a presidential pardon, a reduction in Zuma’s 15-month sentence, or a home arrest.
Ramaphosa, accused by some commentators of being late to respond to the violence, praised the public for defending the assault on the country's democracy.
He lauded those who stood up with the security forces to defend their areas and assets, saying these protected not only their belongings but also the country’s democracy.
The lootings and violence were instigated by people seeking to sow instability, he said.

The Iraqi Health Ministry on Wednesday put the death toll from a fire that engulfed the coronavirus isolation ward at Al-Hussein Hospital in southern Iraq at 60.

Earlier reports said that 92 people had died in the blaze in Nasiriya city in Dhi Qar province.
-There are 39 identified victims in the fire in addition to 21 unidentified corpses- the ministry said in a statement.
Monday’s tragic incident was the second in less than three months.
On April 24, at least 82 people were killed and 110 others injured when a fire broke out at Ibn Al-Khatib Hospital in the capital Baghdad as a result of oxygen cylinder explosion.
Following the incident, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi ordered the arrest of local officials, including the health director of Dhi Qar province, the hospital director and the civil defense chief over the fire.

Four independent Georgian TV stations suspended broadcasts for 24 hours on Wednesday in protest over attacks against journalists and the death of a cameraman.

Demonstrations erupted in the capital Tbilisi following the death on Sunday of Alexander Lashkarava, a 37-year-old cameraman working for independent TV station Pirveli, less than a week after he was assaulted by a violent mob protesting against a planned LGBTQ Pride parade.
His death, and the beating of dozens of other journalists by the mob, has prompted a wave of outrage in the Caucasus country and abroad, with Reporters Without Borders (RSF) saying it "marks a disastrous turning point for the freedom to inform in Georgia."
Prominent Georgian TV personalities and managers have accused Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili's government of setting violent hate groups against critical media.
On Wednesday, four independent TV stations -- Formula, Mtavari, Pirveli, and Kavkasia -- said they were suspending broadcasting for 24 hours.
-Garibashvili must resign. All those who attacked journalists on July 5 must be prosecuted- they said in identical statements on their Facebook pages.
Instead of regular programmes, the four national broadcasters were showing a scrolling list of more that 50 journalists who sustained injuries in last week's attacks including concussions, chemical burns and broken arms.
-We have suspended running programmes for 24 hours. Our silence will shout loudly about the incredible challenges independent media face in Georgia- Pirveli TV's news editor, Nodar Meladze, told AFP.
Hundreds of journalists turned out on Tuesday for Lashkarava's funeral, which saw his coffin carried through a corridor of colleagues with their cameras lowered on tripods.
Garibashvili expressed condolences to Lashkarava's family and colleagues and promised a prompt investigation into the cause of his death, which he has called an "incredible tragedy."
The United States and European Union have condemned the attacks on journalists and called for the prosecution of those responsible.
Asked Wednesday about possible sanctions against Georgian officials over the attacks, US State Department spokesman Ned Price told a press briefing: "We have a number of tools to hold accountable those responsible in some way for human rights abuses, for violence around the world. Sanctions are indeed one of those tools."
RSF has accused authorities of "culpable passivity" and said police had failed to protect journalists.
Critics have accused the ruling Georgian Dream of tacitly supporting homophobic and nationalist groups.
These groups are seen as supporters of the ruling party and have staged protests against pro-Western opposition parties, attacking opposition leaders and activists.
